Unveiling the Beauty of Inky Backgrounds

Creating a captivating background sets the stage for any paper art project. In our new tutorial, we delve into the art of crafting easy inky backgrounds. I’m calling it Inky Background 101. It’s the most basic of the application of Distress Oxide to Mixed Media paper to create subtle beauty on the page. The inspiration of this technique lies in its simplicity—using just a few basic materials, you can transform ordinary paper into a vibrant masterpiece. This is my most favorite thing to do!!!

Watch the Video Tutorial of the Week to discover how simple it is to create this background really fast and really easy. When you get the basics down, then there is a foundation on which to continue to build and learn from. Love love that about this paper crafting artistryl

Steps to Create Inky Backgrounds:

  • Prepare Your Workspace: As mentioned previously, I do like to use a crafty mat when the inks come out.
  • Select Your Colors: For these makes I kept to my favorites: Tattered Rose. Spun Sugar. And Victorian Velvet. What colors would you choose?
  • Apply and Blend: Follow the instructions in this week’s video to see how easily this comes together.
  • Dry and Set: Allow the paper to dry completely, revealing a beautiful and sweetly inked background.

Crafting with Nested Dies

Nested dies offer endless possibilities for paper crafting, allowing you to cut intricate shapes and layers with precision. In the tutorial, we explore how these versatile tools can be used to embellish mini canvases, adding depth and dimension to your artwork. It just makes me so terribly giddy!!!

How to Use Nested Dies:
  1. Choose Your Dies: This week’s video includes not only new dies from ScrapbookCom that are part of their Nested Wavy Dies collection, but also new Sizzix - 49 and Market Dies. Foliage Dies just get this creative. Finally received some of the stamps and dies and they were happily put to good use this week with the Wavy frames. LOVE!!!

  2. Cut and Layer: Die cutting machine of choice is the Spellbinders P6. Using scraps of 49 and Market paper I just cut a bunch of the Fine Stems. You can see the different ways those were put to use in the video too.

Embellish: Add stamped images, sentiment strips, and even Distress Spritz to enhance your design. Go ahead. Just play!

Creating Embellished Mini Canvases

The final step in this journey is assembling your mini canvases. These small, yet striking pieces are perfect for personal gifts, scrapbook page embellishments, or simply celebrating the art of paper crafting. Just making for the sheer joy of making.

Steps to Assemble:
  1. Select a Base: Each of these makes started with Mixed Media Paper because it’s a sturdy foundation, plus holds ink and stamping beautifully.

  2. Layer Your Elements: Arrange your inky background, die cuts, and stamped images on the base. I share a start to finish idea in the tutorial.

  3. Adhere and Finish: Secure all elements with adhesive. And watch as I figure out how to elevate the very slim die cut frame. Yes. I know. There is more than one way. LOL!
