the why of the matter
I hear from a lot of you wonderful creative people on many subjects and ideas. One of the themes I hear about most is the joy found in the making. With that in mind I have a thought.
So often it would seem we desire to change the world in some meaningful way. We see the difficulties on our feed or our news blasts and find sadness and difficulty in those situations. While we are indeed able to send funds to deserving organizations who can help in those places, or while we can pray, as I most often do, there is not much else we can do to help a hurting world at large. It can be frustrating and depressing at best.
With that in mind, what seems at times to get forgotten is the world that is right in front of us. The world that is in our home. In our neighborhoods. Our communities. Our friends and family. We can get swept up in these bigger stories that crush our spirits yet leave us with no real way to impact. All the while looking over that which is living right there within reach.
Does that resonate?
This would be the thesis to the why of card making and sending. Sending notes in the mail is a way to impact the world that is alive and well right here.
It's a passing on the peace that maybe we wish we could pass on to the world at large. But the fact of the matter is, we do impact the world at large when we are living our best lives, giving our best selves, passing the peace to those we interact with daily.
A card in the post for the mail carrier. An intentional hello to the UPS deliverer. A 'how are you' to the cashier at the market.
A card in the mail to someone who may not be expecting it.
Let's renew ourselves to reaching out to those in a beautiful handmade way. Why make cards and send them? Because it's just one way to reach out to another soul simply letting them know we are thinking about them. It's a small joy for us the maker? And for them, the receiver.
"I'm easily distracted by everything that happens in life and I sometimes forget to check in with the people I love. Letters are the perfect way to let people know I'm still thinking about them. And you can write them anywhere, anytime!" Catie Beatty
And that is yet another way to celebrate card and letter writing month.
